BEHIND THE DESIGN OF REMMUS

Unique Finnish design. Remmus is designed by five time Good Design Award winner Tapio Anttila. Good Design Award is the world’s most prestigious global award for new product design and graphics granted by The Chicago Athenaeum and European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

Born in Finnish Lapland, Tapio Anttila spent his childhood in a cold and dark climate, where the polar night, Kaamos, dominates the majority of the year. Perhaps this lack of light during Kaamos periods has turned into an inspiration, as one of Tapio’s main interests in design lies in the use of light and its special characteristics.

Nordic summers are short, but extremely light. In the middle of the summer the sun does not set at all. The contrast between long, dark winters and short but light summers has a reputed effect on the Finnish mentality: Finns want to make most of the summer and enjoy the brief light period wholeheartedly. This creative craziness, when channeled properly, can lead to new, world- changing innovations.

Adaptability is an essential quality of a good designer. The designer has to be able to rapidly adjust according to a new assignment and its particular requirements.  Remmus was a very special assignment for Tapio, as the whole concept of a technologically advanced luxury lounger was yet unparalleled.  – When Henrik asked me to design Remmus, my first thought was:  will it be even possible to fit all the technical features into a plain, functional and elegant form, Tapio describes.

Regardless of the challenging assignment, Henrik’s open-minded and enthusiastic attitude captivated Tapio in less than no time and the designing process got off to a good start. Right after the first sketches the Remmus’ design got its plain and clear- lined form. The theme of the design was to combine functionality, usability and luxury.

Visually, Tapio’s goal was to create a light and graceful whole that suits demanding environments. Finland has long traditions in the building of luxury boats, yachts and cruisers. This tradition served as an important source of inspiration in Remmus’ design and it features materials used in the decks of luxury cruisers, making it endure challenging weather conditions.

– I am very pleased with the end result and believe that Remmus offers its users a unique sun bathing experience.
